Vanadium - Akanvaara


The Akanvaara layered intrusion in north-eastern Lapland is a medium-sized mafic layered intrusion with a surface area of at least 50 square kilometres. The total stratigraphic thickness of the succession is over 3 kilometres. The property was extensively explored by the GTK in 1990’s, and as a result of its work, GTK determined that parts of the system are highly anomalous in terms of platinum group elements, chromium and vanadium.

In 2001-2003 Outokumpu Mining evaluated the Akanvaara intrusion for platinum group elements, and as part of this work it was recognised that the uppermost stratigraphic section of the intrusion including magnetite gabbros is highly anomalous in platinum group elements (up to 1.26 g/t). The GTK drilling and ground magnetic data shows that magnetite gabbros occur in two horizons, which have been intersected with a few drill holes (Figure 1). Vanadium grades of the magnetite gabbro horizons are presented in Table 1.

Two claim reservations, Akanvaara 1-2, were pegged to cover the southern portion of the Akanvaara layered intrusion including vanadium rich magnetite gabbro horizons.
